How to turn your guests into returning guests

Attracting a new guest takes time, effort and money. But there is one group of people who already know your hotel. They know where it is, what the rooms look like and what to expect. If their stay was a good one, they already have a reason to choose you again.

These are your former guests. And yet many small hotels lose contact with them the moment they check out.

The best guest is not always the new guest

New guests are necessary for any hotel to grow. But the business should not have to start from zero with every booking.

A guest who has stayed with you and left happy has one important advantage: they already trust you.

Of course, that does not automatically mean they will return. People travel to different places, change their plans, and sometimes simply forget about last year’s holiday. But if you keep no contact at all, you leave the whole initiative with them.

The relationship starts during the stay

A returning guest is not created by one promotional message in the autumn. They are created by the whole experience.

Small hotels and guesthouses often have an advantage the big chains struggle to reproduce — the personal touch. Remembering a name, a useful tip about the area, or genuine interest in whether someone is comfortable can stay in the memory far longer than another advertising campaign.

Digital communication should continue that relationship, not replace it.

Stay in touch, but have a reason

One of the most common mistakes is sending messages simply because “we should be doing marketing”.

The better question is: is there something useful or interesting we can tell this person?

For example:

  • an early chance to book before the busy season;
  • a special offer for former guests;
  • news about a new service or an improvement at the property;
  • an event or something worth coming for in the area.

You do not need to send messages constantly. Better to write less often and with something to say.

Naturally, when you collect and use contact details for follow-up, it needs to be done lawfully and with consent where consent is required.

Remind guests why they chose you in the first place

Generic messages rarely land. “Come back to us for an unforgettable holiday” could have been written by any hotel.

Your guest has already been to you. So you can be more specific. Remind them of:

  • the atmosphere of the place;
  • what makes the area special;
  • what you have added since;
  • the reason people choose your property in particular.

Real photographs and concrete words beat ready-made phrases.

Make booking direct easy

Imagine a former guest gets your offer and decides they would like to visit again. What do they have to do next?

If the process is complicated, if the site does not work properly on a phone, or if it is unclear how to reach you, that interest can evaporate.

Coming back should be easy. That might mean:

  • a clear phone number and email;
  • a simple enquiry form;
  • an up-to-date website;
  • a convenient way to book directly, when your volume justifies it.

The goal is not to build a complex system. The goal is to put no unnecessary obstacles in front of someone who already wants to return. If you are unsure whether you need such a module, we looked at that question separately.

Do not underestimate reviews

A review is not only a score for your hotel. It is also a chance to continue the conversation with a guest.

Thank people for kind words. Answer criticism calmly. Show that there are people behind the business who listen and care. How to reply to reviews is a subject in itself.

That is visible not only to the person who wrote the review. Every future guest sees it too.

Loyalty is not bought with a discount

A discount can be a useful tool, but it is not the only reason a guest returns. People go back to places where they felt good and where they know what to expect.

So the best strategy for returning guests begins with one simple question: what will make someone remember us when they start planning a holiday again?

Good service answers that question. A good digital presence keeps the answer from being forgotten.

Catalyst44 works with small hotels and guesthouses to help a good experience carry on after the guest leaves — through better communication, better visibility and easier direct contact.

Let us find where you are losing the most

The audit is free and it is not a presentation. We look together at your site, your Google profile and one platform listing, and tell you what we would change first.

  • You get a short written summary after the call
  • We work with a limited number of properties each season — we will say so honestly if there is no room
  • If we decide we are not the right fit for you, we will tell you on the spot

Would you rather just talk?
